Movie Review: Somm

By Davina Horton

How much do you know about wine?

Your skills will surely fall short to the four sommeliers featured in the documentary, Somm. Never have I ever been so impressed by someone's wine knowledge. I consider myself very knowledgeable when it comes to Missouri wines and wine in general. I enjoy blind tasting and guessing which grapes are in a wine, and I'm pretty good when it comes to Missouri Wines. But I was in AWE when the guys in the movie would taste a wine and name not only the grape, but the climate, year, soil, region, and sometimes even the specific wine. Studying for the Master Sommelier exam becomes an obsession for the candidates who have each already failed once. Watching them memorizing their 500 plus flashcards, sacrificing time with their loved ones to cram in blind tastings, and practicing handling mean-hearted customers, make you really want to see them all succeed. Currently there are 135 people who hold the Master Sommelier title in North America. If you love wine, you will definitely be entertained throughout this movie. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll learn a lot about wine. Pop open a bottle of wine and prepare to become emotionally invested in the candidates' quest to pass one of the hardest tests in the world. Cheers!
